EcoTarium Astronomy Speaker Series

Great experience giving a public talk at Alden Planetarium (Worcester, MA) this weekend about How to Make a Galaxy in a Supercomputer.  Thanks to the organizers of the EcoTarium Astronomy Speaker Series and to everyone for the super interesting questions, specially the youngest attendees (5-7 years old?) wondering about the difference between the formation of elliptical and spiral galaxies, or how supermassive black holes move around in galaxies in the early universe!

From Mpc scales down to the accretion disk

Check out our new FORGE’d in FIRE papers!  Building on our previous cosmological hyper-refinement simulations with sub-pc resolution and the STARFORGE model for individual star formation, these are the first cosmological radiation-magnetohydrodynamic simulations self-consistently modeling the dominant physical processes from cosmological (~100 Mpc) scales down to the accretion disk of the central supermassive black hole, resolving the end of star formation and predicting strongly magnetized and turbulent accretion disks unlike many previous models.
